Ontario Service Director
Shirlea Crook
Without exception, people find Shirlea
Crook’s approach to senior care refreshing and
reassuring. Why? Partly this is due to her 15 years
of experience in social services, psychology and
therapeutic recreation. It is also because, over the
years, Shirlea has developed tremendous wisdom and compassion
while working with families in a variety of professional
capacities.
Shirlea can also empathize with families
because of personal experience. During her own frustrating
search for quality care (for her step-father), Shirlea
determined there should be better alternatives - or
she would have to do something about it! Finding no
services that met her family’s needs, she was
motivated to help start Bartimaeus Senior Services
in Spring of 2004 to fill the void.
As director of the company's new and growing
division, Shirlea responds to the needs of families
during what is frequently a challenging time. When invited,
she will get involved in family discussions surrounding
senior care and provide thoughtful, honest and caring
advice. Her professionalism compels her to look at family
dynamics and recommend solutions that will best serve
everyone involved, both caregivers and receivers.
Before coming to Bartimaeus, Shirlea worked
in non-profit social services agencies in the Halton
Region. Most recently, she worked with Halton Child
and Youth Services, a children's mental health agency.
She worked in residential services, policy development,
and management.
From 1993 to1998 Shirlea worked for Halton
Rape Crisis Centre as a Volunteer Co-ordinator. She
managed the 24-hour crisis line and internal and external
communications for the centre. Shirlea facilitated workshops
for the Halton Regional Police Service’s criminal
investigations bureau on sexual assault.
Shirlea’s educational background
includes psychology and behavioural psychology courses
from Brock University and Waterloo University. She also
has a diploma in Recreation Leadership from Mohawk College,
through which she learned to administer activation therapy
for individuals with differing abilities. In addition,
Shirlea completed a certificate in recreation facilities
management, is certified in first aid and CPR, and is
fluent in Level II American sign language.
As a certified trainer in crisis prevention intervention strategies, Shirlea has taught senior care associates throughout Ontario.
